Wire drawing

From GAWDAwiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Wire drawing is a metalworking process in which a wire rod is pulled through one or more dies, reducing its diameter and increasing its length.[1]

Equipment

  • Pointers are used to make a pointed end on a piece of wire, making it easier to thread the wire into a die.[2]
  • Pull-in dogs grip the wire as it moves through the die.
  • Single-block machines pass wire through a die and collect it on a standard block.
  • Multiple-block machines pass wire through a die and collect it on a slightly tapered block. The wire then moves up onto collector pins and exits the upper section, reducing back tension.
  • Inverted drawing machines and gravity blocks are generally used with coarse wire sizes or when drawing wire that requires superior surface quality.[3]
