A welding symbol is the assembled symbol consisting of the following eight elements, or such of these as are necessary: reference line, arrow, basic weld symbols, dimension and other data, supplementary symbols, finish symbols, tail, specification, process, or other references.[1]

These symbols are standardized by the American Welding Society (AWS) and are used to indicate where welds are to be located, the type of joint to be used, and the size and amount of weld metal to be deposited in the joint. Welding symbols allow welders to perform a welding job from a set of blueprints.

The reference line is the anchor of the welding symbol and is used to apply weld symbols, dimensions, and other data to the weld. The arrow connects the reference line to the joint or area to be welded. The direction of the arrow has no bearing on the significance of the reference line. The tail of the welding symbol indicates any specification, process, or other reference information.[2]
