Projection welding

From GAWDAwiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Projection welding is a form of resistance welding in which the size and shape of individual welds are determined by the presence of projections, embossments or intersections on the metals to be joined. Metals are heated and coalescence is achieved not through the use of an arc, but through the metals’ resistance to electrical currents passing through them as they are held together with pressure by electrodes.[1]

Types of Projections

  1. Button or dome projections
  2. Elongated projections
  3. Ring projections
  4. Shoulder projections
  5. Cross wire welding
  6. Radius projections[1]

Benefits

Projection welding is a versatile practice with common applications ranging from sheet joining to attaching nuts and bolts. The process is easy to automate and is quick—numerous welds may be made at the same time.[2]
