Powered air respirator

Jump to: navigation, search

A powered air respirator (PAPR) is a piece of personal protective equipment that uses a motor blower to filter out hazardous particles, gases and vapors from ambient air before it is inhaled by a user. This type of respirator allows the wearer to experience cool fresh air with a greater level of safety since it relies on positive pressure instead of relying on a total face seal. A welding PAPR systems are available to provide general dust and metal fume protection [1] Please note that a supplied air respirator system is required for protection from harmful gases.

Unlike supplied air respirators, powered air respirators do not supply breathable air—rather, they filter contaminants out of ambient air. They must never, therefore, be used in low-oxygen atmospheres. [2]
