A MIG gun is a conduit for the welding wire between the wire feeder and the workpiece. It consists of a stranded cable over a inner tube. A rubber jacket covers this assembly. The wire passes through the cable assembly via the inner tube and through a handle and into conductor tube called a swanneck. A copper tip is inserted at the end of the conductor tube. The welding wire passes through this tip and becomes electrically charged. As the wire contacts the workpiece, and electrical arc is established.

An inert gas is supplied into the MIG gun cable assembly at the connection at the wire feeder. This provides a blanket over the molten metal to protect it from atmospheric contaminants. A nozzle, which slides over the end of the conductor tube, directs the gas blanket. Different size and styles of nozzles are used depending on the application.[1]
