A liner is a replaceable wear member of flexible metal, designed as a spring or a polymeric tube and used in most GMAW, FCAW and SMAW systems to guide the wire/electrode through the composite cable of the welding system from the feeder to the arc. The liner prevents damage to the cable as well as supporting the wire/electrode as it is typically pushed through the system. Periodic changing of the liner to regain smooth feeding is necessary due to wear or accumulating debris. Manufacturers usually design liners to accommodate proper shielding gas flow, strength, long life, compatibility with the wire/electrode in use and clearances for good transfer of the wire/electrode.[1] A liner may also be referred to as material placed between pipe and pipe attachment to protect the piping in refineries or plants.
