Impressed current system
From GAWDAwiki
Impressed current systems are methods of cathodic protection that use rectifiers to convert alternating current to direct current and send that current through insulated wires to anodes in the form of metal bars buried near the tank. The current then travels through the ground to the tank and returns to the rectifier through an insulated wire. The tank is protected from corrosion because the current going to the tank overcomes the corrosion-causing current normally flowing away from it.
Sacrificial anodes are alternative methods of cathodic protection.[1]
