The term charged coupled device, or CCD, is used to describe a type of bar code scanner that acts like a small digital camera taking a digital image of the bar code as opposed to the standard barcode scanner that uses a laser. CCD scanners are a low cost option for scanning barcodes at a short distance (usually within a few inches).[1]
