Hypertherm has successfully brought a group of Chinese counterfeiters to justice. Brett Hansen, corporate intellectual property counsel at the company, spoke in a recent interview with International Quality & Productivity Center about the discovery of counterfeit parts from Chinese manufacturers. “Aftermarket companies have begun copying our parts and selling them as Hypertherm. We’ve also seen counterfeit software.” Hansen discovered one counterfeiter at a trade show, after which an undercover investigation was conducted. “We were able to collect a notarized sample and sued the company in the Chinese legal system. With the evidence we had, the company quickly settled and signed an agreement which proposed strict penalties on them if they ever infringed again.”
