Service Technicians Month Begins

- 9/5/2012

Industrial distributors know that it’s the salespeople who bring the customers in, but it’s the service technicians who keep them coming back. Those service technicians must be proficient in a lot of different skills, both technical and service-oriented. To celebrate the hard-working service techs of the gases and welding industry, Welding & Gases Today has declared September to be Service Technicians Month. Welding & Gases Today is the leading magazine for the gases and welding equipment industry.

While technical skills are a must, astute service technicians understand the importance of providing great customer service. When a customer’s equipment is broken, oftentimes the customer is stressed—and in many cases, the customer is not able to work. Clark Tufte, automation technician at Oxygen Service Company (Saint Paul, MN), says, “With some robotic welding equipment, customers are losing thousands of dollars an hour when they are down. We have to get them back up and running as fast as possible.” Tufte is one of ten service techs featured in the Fall 2012 issue of Welding & Gases Today.

As the economic landscape has changed over the last few years, the importance of having great service technicians has only become more apparent. “With the recession, more customers want me to repair their old equipment, rather than purchase new equipment,” says Brian Hamilton, industrial service technician at Norco in Gillette, Wyoming.  He adds, “A lot of the guys doing pipeline work get real sentimental about their machines.” Hamilton joins Tufte in talking about what it takes to be a great service technician in the article “Top Service Technicians Tell All."

In honor of Service Technicians Month, members of the Gases and Welding Distributors Association can help celebrate these champions of skill and service by nominating the industry’s best service techs for Welding & Gases Today Online’s Service Technician Honor Roll. Association members can visit http://www.weldingandgasestoday.org/index.php/2012/08/service-technician-honor-roll/ to add the names of their service technicians and a few sentences about what makes them so great.
