New Life for Steel Fabricator

- 2/26/2010

Pictou East MLA Clarrie MacKinnon says he’s encouraged by news that Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering will begin steel fabrication work in Trenton.

Representatives from the South Korean-based company told Canadian Press Wednesday that they are on the verge of purchasing the seven-hectare TrentonWorks factory.

Anna Sawinska, business development manager for Daewoo, said that talks are continuing with federal government officials and a final deal has not yet been signed, but plans are being made to release details in Nova Scotia early next month.

It’s believed that the manufacturing giant will be making rotor blades and support stands for wind turbines at the plant. And that’s good news for local workers, says MacKinnon.

“Pictou County’s three MLAs have been there for laid-off railcar workers through three difficult years as government continued its work to find a buyer,” said MacKinnon.

Early projections indicate that hundreds of steel fabrication workers will be needed. MacKinnon points out that we have hundreds of unemployed workers in Pictou County, and many others working elsewhere, who have the desired job skills.
