Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Delivers 1,837 mpg

- 3/29/2010

At the 2010 Shell Eco-Marathon Americas competition held this past weekend on March 27 and 28, teams from 9 high schools and 28 universities tested their student-designed-and-built fuel-efficient vehicles on the streets of Houston, Texas.

For the second year in a row, the student team from Laval University in Quebec, Canada,  took home the grand prize with results of  2,487.5 miles per gallon, equivalent to 1,057.5 kilometres per liter, in the "Prototype" category. And in the "UrbanConcept" category, the team from Mater Dei High School in Evansville, IN took the grand prize for the second year in a row by achieving 437.2 mpg, equivalent to 185.87 km/l.

Using a hydrogen fuel cell, the team from Cicero-North Syracuse High School in Cicero, New York, built a car that delivered 1,837 mpg in its Clean Green Machine vehicle (photo).  Last year, the high school team was the first to build a hydrogen fuel-call car that averaged 1,413.3 mpg on a race track.
