A 70-year-old Nebraska football tradition will be on indefinite hiatus due to the helium shortage. Since 1940, fans have released thousands of red balloons into the air following the first touchdown of each game. Matheson provides the helium for the university, and says it stopped selling helium for balloons earlier this year. Balloons will be released one last time during the Huskers’ season opener, where 2,000 to 2,500 balloons will be inflated—instead of the usual 4,000 to 5,000 balloons. “We don't want to take away helium from hospitals and industries that need it more than we do right now,” says Director of Athletic Marketing Ethan Rowley.
