One of the most iconic helium vessels will receive a facelift as Goodyear announced that it will replace its fleet of 3 Goodyear blimps with larger, faster models. The replacement blimps will be 54 feet longer and will be capable of traveling 19 mph faster than the current ships, which top out at 54 mph. Other changes include the introduction of an aluminum and carbon-fiber skeleton. The new Goodyear blimps will take off in 2014.

According to Goodyear, the current blimps hold 202,700 cubic feet of helium and lose little gas during normal operations. Crews typically add 10,000 cubic feet of gas per month to replace lost helium. Additionally, the gas inside must be purified twice yearly.
