The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources held a hearing on May 10 to discuss the helium shortage, reports The Washington Post. The hearing was tied to the Helium Stewardship Act of 2012, sponsored by Sens. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and John Barrasso (R-WY), which seeks to change how the government sells helium from its Federal Helium Reserve in order to prevent shortages.

David Joyner, president of Air Liquide Helium America, Inc. and Walter Nelson, director of helium sourcing at Air Products and Chemicals, spoke at the hearing. “Chances are you’ve heard little or nothing from your constituents about helium over the past 15 years,” said Nelson. “That’s a good thing,” he added, warning that the problem must be resolved quickly.
