Fifth Grader Creates New Molecule - 2/8/2012
Fifth grader Clara Lazen discovered a new molecule called tetranitratoxycarbon when her teacher in Kansas City, MO, gave the students ball-and-stick models as a way to visualize molecules. The girl arranged carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atom models together in a unique way and asked her teacher if she had built an actual molecule. After sending a photograph of the model to a chemist at Humboldt State University, it was confirmed that the molecule was viable, but non-existent. The molecule is thought to be very powerful, holding the potential to create a large explosion or store large amounts of energy.
