Distributors Deal with "Madness"- 4/10/2009“S. J. Smith recently started up a ‘Continuous Improvement’ program in which we seek out new ways to reduce waste and operate more efficiently. This has led to things like redoing the flow of our fill plant, reducing routing ticket errors and rethinking some stock points. It’s been really exciting to see our people dig into the process and celebrate when they find a new way we can improve.” —Eric Smith, Operations Manager, S. J. Smith Company (Davenport, IA) “It’s up to me to keep us concentrated on maintaining a strong sales and marketing presence while keeping a close eye on our P&L. To do so, I maintain a line-by-line spreadsheet of our overtime and other expenses that directly affect our profit. Watching costs is important, but I never forget that customer service is what got us to where we are. —Veronica Robles, Business Manager, Vern Lewis Welding Supply (Avondale, AZ) “We have found better ways to load and unload trucks and have changed the actual physical layout of our plant. We are expanding the medical part of our facility and bringing in more equipment that will help improve efficiency. We are even implementing GPS technology to route our trucks more efficiently.” —Matt Wysocki, Distribution Management, Metro Welding Supply Corporation (Detroit, MI) “We are closely watching expenses and overhead while maintaining our focus on customer service. We are also looking at new technology to make our fill plant more efficient, such as paperless production logs, cylinder tracking (while in production), palletized cylinder filling and vacuum-jacketed (VJ) piping on cryogenic gases.” —Chuck Britton, Vice President, Plant Operations, nexAir (Memphis, TN) Read about the rest of our “Sweet 16” here.
