Xenon Holds Deep-Space Potential

According to new scientific research plasma thrusters could replace chemical rockets used in deep-space exploration missions. The plasma thrusters use xenon gas as a propellant, and are 13 times as powerful as current versions used for spacecraft orientation control. The new systems could also provide a weight savings of around 4,400 pounds on a satellite that typically weighs around 12,125 pounds.
