Welding, Oxygen Assist Miners' Rescue - 10/13/2010
The gases and welding industry played an important role in helping to rescue 33 Chilean miners who have been trapped in a copper and gold mine since August 5. To prevent the 2,300 ft escape shaft from collapsing, workers welded 16 steel pipes together to provide reinforcement for the first several hundred feet, where a collapse is most likely. The high quality of the welds was imperative to the safety of the miners being rescued.
The Phoenix rescue capsule was outfitted with oxygen tanks and a mask to provide oxygen in the confined space during the 16-minute ascent. NASA assisted Chilean Navy engineers in the design of the 13-ft-long capsule.
