With an annular solar eclipse approaching this weekend, the Western United States is scrambling to get its hands on number 14 welder’s glass, which provides protection for viewers of the eclipse. Without eye protection, an annular eclipse can cause eye damage or even blindness. Shasta Welding Supply in Redding, CA, told The Record Searchlight that the company’s phones have not stopped ringing. Manager Kevin Saber says the glass is darker than most welders use, so is something customers rarely ask for. “I’ve had three in stock sitting there forever, he says.” The company quickly sold those three and ordered 60 more.
