Welding Badge Proposed

A committee organized by the American Welding Society (AWS) plans to submit a curriculum to the Boy Scouts of America for a welding badge. Jack Compton, welding professor at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, CA, and member of the AWS committee, says recent research shows that the country will need 200,000 welders by 2010 to replace retiring welders. He hopes to expose students to the welding field to help with this need.

“We want to expose as many people in the school systems and in the Scout programs, both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, to welding as a career,” he says.
