Welder Among Freed Missionaries- 2/19/2010Jim Allen stood holding his wife's hand almost in awe at the moment. He was finally back home after spending 21 days in a Haitian jail. Allen was greeted with cheers and applause at a hospitality room in the Amarillo Civic Center on Thursday afternoon, a day after returning to American soil in Florida. With about 20 family members behind him, the 47-year-old told the crowd that included members of Paramount Baptist Church that he was glad to be back home. Allen was the lone Texan in a group of 10 missionaries arrested Jan. 29 and charged with child kidnapping for trying to take 33 children out of the quake-stricken country without government documents. Allen said he went to the country to lend his welding skills and help the recovery. He went on less than 2 days' notice after his cousin told him about the trip.
