Underwater Welding Boosts Productivity - 6/9/2009
Bagsværd, Denmark – According to a news release from BIMCO, South Korea, along with Japan and China, build about 85% of ships worldwide. Additionally, South Korea secured about 40% of the ships ordered throughout the world in 2007, making the country a leader in shipbuilding.
South Korea's success as a leader in shipbuilding is due in part to underwater welding systems, which enable ships to be built that are bigger than the available building dock.
South Korea has tended to focus on the production of large tankers, bulk carriers and container ships, ships that can be built employing series production techniques. But it has also been able to capitalize on the need for sophisticated vessels such as those designed for the carriage of liquefied natural gas, where specialist construction skills have been necessary.
