Tech Ed Officials Seek Funding - 1/31/2012
Technical education officials in Alabama met with legislators to outline the need for funding for career technical education programs. The officials are seeing a $30 million bond issue to improve facilities and equipment, $5 million in the state budget for summer programs and teacher contract extensions, and an allocation of $1,800 per program per year. Gary Dan Williams, director of the Center for Technology, presented several statistics to the group, including the fact that Alabama has lost more than half its career technical centers in the past twenty years, including 1,500 teachers. Williams pointed out that 65 out of every 100 jobs requires trade skills or technical degrees. State Rep. Ken Johnson pledged his support and recognized the need for 7,000 welders.
