Social Media Impacts Authentic Leadership

- 4/18/2012

Now more than ever, there are great social-enterprise networking tools for leaders to create and nourish connections. Along with mobile access, these internal social networks afford leaders an amazing, real-time, all-the-time connection to their employees, to the issues facing the business, to new product ideas and to every aspect of the business. Karl Meinhardt, author of The Leaders’ New Clothes: The Naked Truths of Leadership, discusses authentic leadership for the social enterprise in his article “Return On Relationships.” The article appears in the Spring 2012 issue of Welding & Gases Today, the leading magazine for the gases and welding equipment industry.

In his book, Meinhardt outlines seven “Naked Truths of Authentic Leadership.” The first of these is about how leaders are perceived by those they lead. It states that:  “Perception is all there is—you are the leader you are perceived to be.” How a leader is perceived by employees affects the culture inside the organization. Meinhardt says, “Imagine being more than just perceived as, but instead KNOWN to be, an engaged leader who listens to, interacts with and learns from the employees in the organization. That is the definition of authentic leadership. The impact of such authenticity would be far reaching and better than any perception of one as a leader.”

Meinhardt adds, “It’s no secret that the way we communicate inside the organization is rapidly changing with the advent of social organizations. Leaders can authentically participate for a maximum return on relationship, or they can be perceived as disconnected, uninterested or not present.”

Meinhardt is a featured speaker at the upcoming Gases and Welding Distributors Association 2012 Spring Management Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. He will deliver his presentation “The Chaos of Social Media” during the business session on Tuesday, May 1.
