Snail Inspires CO2 Process - 9/28/2010
A researcher at MIT credits the abalone, a type of sea snail, with providing the secret to turning carbon dioxide into a viable construction material. Angela Belcher, professor of energy at the institute, developed genetically engineered yeast to simulate the process whereby abalones build their own shells from the gas. Belcher says the method offers a safe, long-term solution for carbon capture and storage as solid carbonates that can be used in building construction.
