Small Biz Lending Bill Gets Closer- 7/23/2010The U.S. Senate voted Thursday to include the $30 billion small business lending proposal as an amendment to a larger small business aid bill. The overall bill still must be voted on by the Senate before the lending program would go into effect. The $30 billion lending bill was considered a very controversial proposal. Opponents voiced concerns that the proposal was a bailout and that it would encourage banks to take on risky loans. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) removed the proposal from the original small business aid package and proposed the measure as a separate amendment instead, hoping to keep the bill alive even if the lending amendment failed. The amendment was passed by a Senate vote of 60 to 39. Republican Senate leaders are encouraging additional amendments to the bill before the legislation goes to a vote. There is no indication as to whether the overall aid package will pass.
