Service Welding President Remembered

- 2/22/2012

Margaret S. Marshall, 70, president of Service Welding Supply in Miami, FL. Mrs. Marshall got her start in the industry in 1981, when her husband Sam, previously employed by National Cylinder Gas and Standard Welding, came upon an opportunity to own his own business. Together, the couple purchased Service Welding Supply from its retiring owner and relocated to Miami to run the business. Mrs. Marshall oversaw the back office, bookkeeping and billing for the family business until her husband’s passing in 1994.

Her son, Rick Marshall, co-owner of the business, says, “When my dad passed away, she was up against the decision to sell the business or keep it going. She decided to run the business herself, and she ultimately ran the business longer than she did with my dad. It was quite an accomplishment.” Following the honest business style of her husband, Mrs. Marshall earned respect from customers and suppliers alike. She saw her employees as part of her family, and as a result, cultivated a loyal core of employees who carved out long careers for themselves at Service Welding.

Mrs. Marshall loved woodworking and could always find a way to reuse a piece of wood. Rick Marshall recalls his mother turning an old set of shelves into a decorative box. “She could take any piece of wood, polish it up and turn it into a treasure,” he says. Mrs. Marshall’s two sons, Rick and Sam, are now co-owners of the business.
