According to an article in USA Today, the railroad industry is petitioning the federal government to cut back on shipments of hazardous materials via railway, citing dangers to urban areas due to possible releases of toxic chemicals. The industry is currently required to transport hazmat by federal law.

The petition is opposed by the Obama administration as well as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT). Opponents believe railway shipping is a safer option than using trucks.
