RFID Tracking Respirators - 6/10/2009
Hauppauge, NY – Colden Corp. is using RFID tags on the 3M respirators it services in order to stay compliant with OSHA regulations regarding respirator maintenance.
OSHA requires respirators, used in the welding industry as personal protection equipment, be regularly cleaned, maintained and tested. The company uses RFID tags to track when its employees inspect respirators at a northwestern Pennsylvania locomotive manufacturer. Inspectors carry handheld interrogators to read the ID number on each respirator. Using the scanner, the inspector can view details on the device's screen regarding that respirator and its maintenance history. While conducting the inspection and any maintenance, the inspector inputs those actions. The data is then stored on a Web-based system hosted by 3M, which manufactures both the respirators and the RFID system.
"I think one really nice ancillary benefit is knowing what time the maintenance was conducted," notes Chris Wesley, principal at Colden. "It saves us two to three hours a week," he adds, "which is significant."
