Praxair To Open Carbon Dioxide Plant

- 7/15/2010

Praxair, Inc. will invest $15 million in a new carbon dioxide purification and liquefaction plant in Hopewell, VA. The company signed a 15-year contract to purchase carbon dioxide from Osage Bio Products, part of Osage Bio Energy. The carbon dioxide is produced as a byproduct of ethanol fermentation in Osage Bio Energy’s barley-to-ethanol bio-processing operation.

Praxair’s new plant will produce up to 450 tons per day of carbon dioxide. The gas will be used in food freezing, food processing and for beverage applications.

“Our intention is to build a world-class facility at the Osage Bio Energy plant in Hopewell, which will help us better serve our growing customer base in the East Region,” says Ted Trumpp, vice president East Region for Praxair's North American Industrial Gases business unit.

“Biogenic carbon dioxide from our fermentation process is a wonderful source for food grade applications,” says Craig Shealy, president and CEO of Osage Bio Energy. “Praxair is a top-tier industrial gas company, and we are excited to work with them to co-locate a plant on our site.”

Praxair’s carbon dioxide plant is scheduled to start up in the fourth quarter of 2011.
