Port Of LA Testing Hydrogen Hybrids

- 1/19/2010
The Port of Los Angeles is buying eight heavy-duty hybrid trucks that are powered by a combination of hydrogen fuel cells and lithium batteries. The trucks come from Vision Industries of Santa Monica and are part of the port’s emissions-trimming Clean Truck Program.

The port—along with the rest of the state—is under pressure from legislation to reduce greenhouse gases signed into law last year by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The law sets mandatory caps on emissions beginning in 2012.

The trucks, which cost $255,000 each, have a potential range of up to 400 miles, according to Vision. They will be put through a series of tests to determine their ability to function in a variety of capacities, including short- and medium-distance hauling, hauling different size loads and seeing how they operate in a variety of situations, including different road conditions, according to Chris Cannon, the manager of the port’s clean truck program.
