Pennsylvania Seeks Nitrogen Filling Stations

- 7/9/2010

The state of Pennsylvania is offering financial assistance for the purchase and installation of nitrogen filling stations for automotive tires. Pennsylvania’s Nitrogen Tire Inflation System Grant Program offers up to $5,000 in reimbursement costs. Applicants must match 50 percent of the equipment’s total cost.

To meet program requirements, the gas used to fill tires must deliver at least 95 percent nitrogen according to manufacturer specifications. The Pennsylvania grant program is aimed at increasing gas mileage and tire lifespan by inflating vehicle tires with nitrogen.

“Automotive tires filled with nitrogen rather than conventional air maintain their pressure up to four-times longer,” says Department of Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger. “Properly inflated tires are safer and more fuel efficient, which translates into saving money at the gas pump.”

A total of $100,000 is available for reimbursements. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The program will remain open until funds have been exhausted or until June 30, 2011.
