Oxygen Treats Lyme Disease - 7/27/2010
As cases of Lyme disease increase in the summer months, doctors are turning to hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat the malady. “Bacteria, such as that which causes Lyme disease, are unable to survive in such an oxygen-rich environment and can be greatly reduced or eliminated over a course of treatments,” says Rashmi Gulati, MD, medical director of Patients Medical, a holistic medical center in New York City. According to data from the New York City Health Department, Lyme disease is up 20 percent from 2003 to 2009. The disease is commonly carried by ticks, with the greatest risk of infection being for hikers, campers and participants in other outdoor activities.
