Oxygen Solution - 2/18/2010
Wednesday, February 17, marked the one-year anniversary of President Obama’s signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It was also the day that stimulus projects across the country were required to get underway. In Springfield, MO, city officials broke ground on a new disinfection system at the Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant. The new ozone disinfection system replaces a similar system that’s been in place since 1983.
The old equipment will be up and running at the plant until the new system is completed in about 2 years. Ed Malter, superintendent of sanitary services for the city of Springfield, explained how the equipment works, "We're sending pure oxygen through cylinders there and putting a high electric charge on the pure oxygen, which changes it to ozone."
