Would you pay $3,000 for a helium-filled balloon? According to Prof. Robert Richardson, physics — a Nobel Laureate — the U.S. supply of helium will be depleted in about thirty years, pushing the gas’ price to an astronomical level.

 Richardson, who won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physics, said that helium must be sold at a higher price — at its open market value — in order to conserve it. He co-chaired a panel to write an article for the National Academy of Sciences this past August, entitled “Selling the Nation’s Helium Reserve,” which was published this year. In the article, he outlines the importance of raising the price of helium.
