New Welding Research

A research program at the University of Alberta is setting out to revolutionize the welding industry by investigating new methods and processes at the molecular level. Studies will investigate the principles of magnetohydrodynamics—first developed as a way to study behavior on the surface of the sun—which will help researchers better understand what takes place in the extremely high temperatures produced by welding arcs.

In addition to traditional welding practices, research will focus on newer techniques such as laser beam and friction stir welding.

New research focused on technology that helps our customers be profitable by doing more with less is great. For example, we have already seen some of our suppliers investing in tools that cut thicker materials for 20% less money, and that’s exactly the kind of innovation we need.
