New Law Addresses Medical Gases - 7/11/2012
President Obama signed into law The Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA), S. 3187, bipartisan legislation that includes provisions on medical gases. The law establishes designated medical gases: oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, helium, carbon monoxide and medical air that meet the standards set forth in an official compendium. A certification process for other medical gases is set forth in the law. Additionally, the legislation sets forth approved uses of medical gases, including the use of oxygen for the treatment or prevention of hypoxemia or hypoxia and the use of nitrous oxide for analgesia.
