NC Inspects Hazmat Trucks

According to Charlotte’s WSOC TV, North Carolina state troopers recently staged a number of surprise inspections of trucks moving hazardous materials. Mecklenburg County was the site of the inspections due to the large amounts of chemical loads that are transported through the area.

The inspections consisted of approximately 40 steps, with officers checking everything from placards to safety chains.

"Liquids could come out, solids could come out—just as with any chemicals, certain things can't mix together, and with that happening, you could have the risk of an explosion, a fire, toxic fumes,” says Sgt. Darren Conrad of the Highway Patrol.

A total of approximately 200 trucks were inspected. Violations included poor brakes, unsecured loads and missing placards. Approximately 30 trucks were put out of service until repairs could be made. The Highway Patrol plans to conduct similar projects this summer.
