HeadlinesMoon Water Holds Hydrogen Fuel Potential - 7/22/2010
NASA recently discovered the presence of water on the moon, and now says the water holds the potential to be used for hydrogen rocket fuel. Last October, NASA intentionally crashed the LCROSS probe and the accompanying rocket into the surface of the moon. Scientists discussed the findings from the mission at the NASA Lunar Science Forum held earlier this week. The scientists now know that the LCROSS probe crashed in an isolated wet spot on the moon. When the probe crashed, masses of ice were among the debris. NASA’s scientists believe that there are other similar wet spots across the moon. Along with the water, the LCROSS mission discovered the presence of hydrogen and methane gases on the moon. The hydrogen gas and hydrogen separated from water on the moon presents an exciting possibility to NASA scientists. They say the hydrogen could be used to fuel a return trip to Earth or to fuel a mission on to Mars.
