Saturday, September 25, saw the launch of 20 hydrogen balloons, as the Gordon Bennett 2010 International Gas Balloon Race kicked off from Leeds Castle, UK. The winner of the annual competition, which began in 1906, is the team travelling the greatest distance in its balloon. 2009’s winning distance of 1588.294 km (986.92 mi) has already been surpassed in this year’s race. Close to 1000 cubic meters of hydrogen gas was supplied for the 20 vessels by BOC, part of The Linde Group.
