Hospital Opens Hyperbaric Medicine Department

- 3/8/2010

St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network on Thursday officially opened a new wound-management center in Allentown for patients with nonhealing wounds caused by diabetes and other conditions.

The new center, at St. Luke's Hospital-Allentown, began seeing patients in mid-January.

Diabetic foot ulcers, foot sores caused by lack of circulation and traumatic wounds are among the conditions treated at the center.

Services include surgical removal of foreign objects, reconstructive surgery and pain-reducing wound dressings.

Specialists at the center include trauma surgeons, vascular and plastic surgeons, infectious disease doctors and podiatrists.

It is one of several wound-management centers within St. Luke's network. Other centers are located in Bethlehem, Quakertown and Coaldale.

In Allentown, the center is next to the Hyperbaric Medicine Department.

Hyperbaric oxygen can be used to treat a number of different conditions, including problem wounds, bone infections and the effects of radiation.
