Home Hydrogen Fueling Station Unveiled- 7/8/2010Honda is developing a home hydrogen refueling station for use with its hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. According to Honda, the ability to refuel cars at home ranks third in motivating factors for owning an electric vehicle. The company hopes to extend this luxury to hydrogen fuel cell vehicle owners in the future by providing access to home fueling stations. The lack of a hydrogen fueling infrastructure has been a major concern for automakers. In an interview with the L.A. Times, Tim Brown, technology manager for sustainable transportation UC Irvine, says that hydrogen fueling options have not progressed at the same rate as hydrogen vehicle development. There are currently 21 hydrogen fuel stations in the state of California, with 4 more in the works. Brown is conducting research to optimize the placement of hydrogen stations. Honda’s home hydrogen station will rely on solar energy and will generate 0.5 kilograms of hydrogen for eight hours of sun. That amount of hydrogen could accommodate an estimated 30 to 35 miles of driving.
