A replica Civil War helium ballon known as the Intrepid will take to the air on July 4th at the Genesee Country Village & Museum for its inaugural flight, thanks to the donation of 50,000 cubic feet of helium. The original balloon was used by Union soldiers to observe enemy troops. The Rochester, NY, museum is offering tethered rides, taking guests 300 feet in the air. The ongoing helium shortage threatened to ground the balloon, but the museum was able to continue as planned thanks to the donation of helium from Macys, known for its helium-filled Thanksgiving Day parade balloons.
