HeadlinesHazmat Trucking Update- 5/15/2009One of the amendments, called the Screening Applied Fairly and Equitably to Truckers Act of 2009, or the SAFE Truckers Act, would remove the requirement for all hazmat truckers to undergo background checks, instead requiring only those hauling materials deemed “security-sensitive” to get the checks. The second amendment proposes changes to the Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) program. It would require agencies to process TWIC cards within 30 days “to the greatest extent possible,” and also require escorts to be made available at ports and facilities requiring the credential for truckers who have not yet received their TWIC cards.
