Gov. Urged to Support OSHA

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) recently sent a letter to Florida Governor Charlie Crist, urging him to support compliance with OSHA safety standards at all levels of government. The letter, which is the second notice the CSB has sent to the governor, comes three years after sparks from a welding torch ignited fumes from a nearby methanol tank at a wastewater treatment facility in Daytona Beach, killing two city workers.

The CSB has since determined that the accident could have been avoided if federal safety training standards were applied to all levels of government. A state task force recently agreed with the CSB and recommended the OSHA standards should be applied within the next three years. Florida lawmakers are currently reviewing legislation that would require cities, counties, school districts and other state and local agencies to meet the OSHA requirements by June 30, 2012.
