First Welding Badge Awarded - 2/29/2012
Robert Nelsen, a sophomore at Tustin High School in California was the first to receive the new welding merit badge from the Boy Scouts of America, according to the OC Register. Nelsen is an Eagle Scout who has received 132 badges, making him only the third Scout to do so in the U.S. In order to earn the badge, Scouts must learn proper welding safety and understanding of terms like welding, electrode, slag and oxidation. Scouts must also perform several welds and research welding career opportunities. Full requirements for the badge are available here.
