Eclipse Viewers Use Welding Glass

- 5/16/2012

There will be an partial solar eclipse this Sunday, May 20, visible in the western United States during late afternoon. The moon will cover 83 percent of the sun’s surface, creating a rare “ring of fire” known as an annular eclipse. According to NASA, annular eclipses are never safe to watch without taking special precautions. “Failure to use appropriate filtration may result in permanent eye damage or blindness!” warns the NASA Eclipse website. There are several methods by which one can view an eclipse, however. The most widely available filter for safe solar viewing is a number 14 welder’s glass, available through welding supply distributors.
