DOE Funds Carbon Dioxide Coolant Research

- 7/13/2010

The University of Notre Dame received a $2.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to research more efficient methods of using carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. The grant is part of the DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) which provides funding to projects that focus on accelerating innovation in green technology while increasing America's competitiveness in grid scale energy storage, power electronics and energy efficient cooling systems.

With current methods, the use of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant is limited by the high pressure required. Researchers at the University of Notre Dame are looking into the use of carbon dioxide-ionic liquids as alternative coolants, which require less pressure than conventional methods.

“These innovative ideas will play a critical role in our energy security and economic growth,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu. “It is now more important than ever to invest in a new, clean energy economy.”
