Commercial Drivers Banned From Texting - 1/26/2010
Truck and bus drivers will be banned from sending text messages over cell phones while driving, the Department of Transportation said Tuesday.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will announce the ban, which takes effect immediately, at a press conference in Washington January 26.
The ban is part of DOT's campaign against "distracted driving," which is seen as a growing highway safety threat in the age of mobile and wireless phones.
Truckers who send text messages while behind the wheel may be fined up to $2,750.
